Train passengers desire relevant, location-aware information to enhance and support their travel experience. Deploying networked in-vehicle digital signage can meet this need while offering train systems an attractive source of new revenue.

High-quality, durable displays produced by Litemax can fit into almost any space and provide high resolution, impactful messaging to the traveling public. These displays are designed and built to operate reliably in tough in-car environments for the long-life cycles demanded by train installations. Together with Spectrum Displays LLC and Advanced Application Designs Inc., proven, world-class end-to-end, in-car digital signage solutions are offered to transportation customers.

If desired, these digital signage solutions can interface directly, via a passive interface, with train control systems to provide passengers with highly accurate information including estimated train arrival and destination, as well as safety, commercial and entertainment messaging. Customized screens, visible in high ambient lighting, can be sized to fit into non-standard spaces such as those above a subway train’s doors. These displays have special shock absorbency to allow them to continue functioning for years despite the rigors of constant train travel.

In addition to the screens, systems include modern, sophisticated processing power, network connectivity, solid-state memory, and fan-less enclosures. The high-resolution monitors are capable of displaying any language, font or graphic, unlike the older low resolution LED dot matrix displays still found in many US transportation systems. New modern displays can inform and entertain customers, creating a perceived shorter transit time. Well-informed passengers tend to have higher satisfaction levels with fewer complaints.

Transit systems can generate additional revenues by offering advertising on the displays. Ads can promote businesses along the route or make special offers to travelers. Nearly 70 percent of customers say digital display messages sway their purchasing decisions, according to studies by Nielson Media Research. Ad content can include text, images, audio or video. Digital signage ads can succeed where other attempts fail because it often has a “captive” audience open to messaging and because it can trigger purchase behavior while passengers are nearby. Ad revenues can help cover the costs of train projects and system operation.

Remote updating of signage messaging allows rapid, efficient, and cost-effective deployment of relevant information to passengers. As most passengers are frequent users of high-resolution cell phones and TVs, putting an old dot-matrix display in front of them can potentially cause a negative perception of the transit system. On the flip side, modern, multilingual digital signage sends a warm, welcoming message to the traveling public.
